To Franchise or Not to Franchise: Better Life Maids Covers The Pros & Cons

Deciding to buy into a franchise is usually not a cheap proposition. After all, you’re buying into the expertise, guidance and knowledge of the franchisor. That saves a lot of time in the learning curve, trust me. When Angela and I decided to franchise our Better Life Maids business, we wanted to be sure it met the needs of potential franchisees by providing a turnkey system that is easy to execute and well-documented. In other words, we wanted to see our franchisees be successful right out of the gate.

But is a franchise the right decision for you? Here is a list of general pros and cons to consider as you make your decision.

Pros

  1. A solid franchise in the right area can be a truly lucrative venture.
  2. The brand name and opportunity is already developed. While you might be a new entrant into an area, you’re still working within a proven and successful system that should get you started on the right foot.
  3. You’re not alone – you have training and assistance available so you can get questions answered quickly and issues resolved in record time. No having to “figure it out.”
  4. You don’t have to develop marketing plans; those are already done for you. This includes advertising and promotional support.

Cons

  1. You can be creative, but within the bounds of the franchise. You may be required to use the same branding logo, website design and other things specific to the franchise in order to maintain the integrity of the brand.
  2. Some franchises can be incredibly expensive. (Better Life Maids franchises are not.)
  3. You will owe a royalty or franchise fee ongoing. Some franchises also require advertising fees.
  4. You must follow the rules of the franchise or you risk losing your business opportunity.

Franchising can be an easy way to get into business for yourself. But do review documents carefully, be sure you understand the fine print and that you agree with the general business philosophy. Also, be certain you have stellar communications with the franchisor. Nothing can kill a deal sooner than miscommunications and mistakes made because something wasn’t understood.
